Failed Disguise

where the prompt given was:
He put on a wig hoping that he wouldn’t be recognized, but realize he had failed when…
(modified for the purposes of this story)
I’ve also used this prompt:

“You disobeyed a direct order and acted too quickly,” Joe said sternly, “and as a result the stakeout was a bust.”

“I’m sorry,” Josie whispered.

“I’m sure you are, but this isn’t the first time you’ve disobeyed orders, is it, Josie?”

“No, sir.”

“So you understand that, for your own good, I can’t be lenient with you. I’m suspending you for
two weeks, without pay. Surrender your shield and your weapon.”

Wordlessly, tearfully, Josie handed them over.
“Don’t cry, Josie,” Joe said, taking her in his arms and stroking her hair. “It’s only for two weeks.”

But it’s never only two weeks, or even only one day, when it’s a punishment.

A week into her suspension, Josie was bored out of her skull. She just had to see what was going on at the 2-3.

Deciding to try to sneak in, she put on a wig hoping that she wouldn’t be recognized, but realized she had failed when she walked into
the squad room and Joe said, “You’re not supposed to be here, Josie. You’re still on suspension, remember?”

“How did you know it was me?”

Joe lifted Josie’s hand.

Of course.

She should have removed her blue nail polish.
