Millicent sat at her rosewood desk in her fifth grade classroom, trying to finish a hundred word composition before the English lesson ended.
“You may choose any topic,” Miss Jackson had said, “but your content will flow more smoothly if you write about something familiar.”
Millicent, never good at writing compositions, tried not to listen to the steady, inexorable ticking of the clock.
When the bell rang, announcing that the time was up, she had written only seventy-nine words.
