A drunk driver.
A little girl dead.
Josie, arriving on the scene, saw the white sheet covering the small body, the parents standing there, stunned, shattered.
“I’m so sorry,” she said, knowing, even as she spoke, how inadequate the words were.
“Damn drunk driver,” Josie cursed under her breath.
And then she saw the car, and knew who the driver was.
Just then she hated her job, hated being a cop.
And, for a fraction of a fragment of a split second, she hated Gary.
Hated him for driving drunk.
Hated him for the result.
Hated him for putting her in this position.
Some moments can never be erased from our minds.
This, for Josie, was one of them.
How much more, it suddenly hit her, was it for Gary?
For the first time in her career as a cop, Josie cried while making an arrest.
