Josie had faced many dangerous situations. Sometimes she’d even endangered herself unnecessarily. At such times,
Joe had lowered his eyebrows, lectured her, and handed down a punishment, telling her, “It’s for your own good.”
Joe had just spoken those familiar words as Josie sat next to him.
“I know it is, but can’t we just forget about it?” she pleaded, feeling her face glow with shame at her fear.
“No, Josie,” Joe said. “It’s best to get it over with.”
The receptionist called Josie’s name, and Joe walked with her into the dentist’s office.
