I remember the first time I read this atrocious review, or rather, vicious attack,
so full of vitriol (I won’t say what else I think it was full of!).
I wished I could go back in time and raise a ruckus at the Quarterly.
John Kieran wrote in “Books I Love”,
“Croker ‘ s article on the young and tender Keats and his poetry in the Quarterly Review of October 1818 was nothing less than attempted murder. A pox on him!”
Many people attribute the early death of John Keats, at least in part, to
that review, but I’m withholding my judgment on that.
I just wonder if that critic ever regretted having been so harsh.
