- Do you have a favorite author? If so, who and why? If not, why not?
My taste in reading is too eclectic for me to narrow it down to one favorite author, unless we include poets.
My favorite poet is Gerard Manley Hopkins, and my favorite poem, “Pied Beauty”.
- What was the first book you remember enjoying reading?
The first book I remember loving is “Baby Farm Animals”, by Garth Williams. One of my earliest memories is looking at the pictures, totally absorbed, or carrying the book to a parent or grandparent with the request/demand, “READ!”
The first book I enjoyed reading was “Caps For Sale”, by Esphyr Slobodkina, because that was the first book I read on my own. In fact, I taught myself to read with that book when I was in nursery school.
I learned how to read words before I could name all the letters of the alphabet.
- What three books best sum up your taste in literature?
I can’t pick just three books, since my taste is so varied. I can, however, name my very favorite novel: “In This House Of Brede”, by Rumer Godden.
