Telephone Exchanges (Old Post, slightly expanded)

Nowadays, telephone numbers are just that: Numbers.

There are times, even after so many years, that I wish we could go

back to using exchange names.  To me, the numbers 33,74, and 89 (three three, not thirty-three, seven four, not seventy-four, and eight nine, not eighty-nine can never replace the names DEwey, SHeepshead, and TWining.

And I find 64 ( six four, not sixty-four) a poor, almost pathetic, substitute for what, to me, was the prettiest exchange name of all.

My exchange.
