FOWC with Fandango — Speech
It’s funny. I can’t remember exactly how old I was; I only know that I was in my early or middle teens, and my Baba, my father (who had come for a Sunday visit) and I were watching “The Happy Years”, an old movie about boys in prep school, on tv. The film was based on Owen Johnson’s “Lawrenceville” stories,
which I’ve just decided to re-read.
I saw the movie only that one time, and I’ve forgotten most of it, but I do have one indelible memory.
The local pancake house had a standing contest in which, if any boy from the school broke the pancake-eating record, there would be free pancakes for the entire school for the rest of the day. Well, one boy broke the record… and then
some. He ate FORTY-NINE pancakes, which is about 46 or 47 more than I could
manage in one sitting.
His schoolmates were yelling, “Speech! Speech!”
And my father went, “Buuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrp!”
😂
