Retro Virtual Reality

I’ve participated in online RPGs. I’ve had virtual babies, virtual pets, virtual houses, virtual careers. I’ve played Farmville, and someday I might have a farm there again. I’ve enjoyed the virtual reality…[but isn’t that a contradiction in terms?] offered by various websites, some of which are now gone. So I’m not writing this post to disparage those sites or their users, because then I’d have to disparage myself as well.

But I remember when we had virtual pets, virtual houses, virtual careers, virtual children, virtual farms… virtual you-name-it… and we didn’t need any electronic devices.

We had role-playing games without having to join an online group.

We just needed our imaginations.

And we didn’t need to get a certain number of points to move on to the next level.
